Clubhouse Snowman

There are parts in the Arizona desert where it snows.

The Clubhouse is not located in or near those parts.
On purpose.
When we moved here from Buffalo, NY my plan was to quite possibly never see snow again.

Then I had a kid,
and he wanted to make a snowman...

I googled "snow dough", found a popular recipe, and we got to work.

Note the printed recipe. I always type up and print out the recipes for him so that he can "read", follow, and measure along while we create.

Unfortunately after we followed this recipe, we had what was more like a goop soup. So, it was time to improvise.

Another cup of this, attempt to knead. A 1/2 cup of that... knead again. Finally, we reached a consistency I could agree with as far as snow is concerned.
So then, we added glitter of course.

The dough we ended up with was not as easily pliable as play dough because, well, snow isn't pliable. The dough crumbles into fluffy "snow" for a sensory table, or you can pack it into a nice snowball.

Yes, pack it. That's how snowballs are made. I may have escaped the snow of Western New York, but not before I mastered the art of packing a snowball. This art can now be passed on to my son, thanks to snow dough (minus the frostbite).

So, ready for the recipe?

• 2 Cups Cornstarch
• 1/2 Cup Salt
• 1/2 Cup Flour
• 1 Tablespoon Cream of Tartar
• 1 Tablespoon Oil
• 1 cup hot water, I used my Keurig for this step. It's not just for coffee ;)
• Glitter, we used iridescent for a slight sparkle with no added color.

Since we started with a different recipe and then added as we went along, there was really no set direction on when we added what. I'd say though, mix all the dry ingredients and then add the oil and water. Mix, let cool, and then knead until you have your dough.

Once our Snow Dough was ready, we had fun doing this...

The next day, after having our dough in an airtight bag overnight, we did this...

Simply adding things like twigs, pom poms, scraps of fabric, different sized pipe cleaners, and buttons can lead to an entire snow village...

even in the desert :)
